Don't tell me to smile

Do you recognize yourself in what the media say about women? Let’s take back the conversation.

Don’t Tell Me to Smile is a digital storytelling experiment initiated by the BBC, aimed at an audience of young women. This pilot takes three issues - tattoos, egg freezing, and body conformity - and challenges the typical, annoying things the media say about women.

Short video interviews, articles and social media content are combined in an interactive experience, designed to be watched on a mobile device. The audience is invited to respond, vote and discuss throughout, and become their own spokesperson on the issues that matter to them.

Don’t Tell Me to Smile was launched as a pilot on BBC Taster in 2016.
